About the Artist
About the Artist
Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter and printmaker, best known for his iconic work The Scream (1893), which has become a universal symbol of modern anxiety and existential dread. His art is deeply emotional, often exploring themes of love, death, fear, illness, and human vulnerability.
Munch’s early life was marked by tragedy — the loss of his mother and sister to disease left a lasting imprint on his psyche. These experiences shaped his vision and led him to express raw psychological states through bold colors, dramatic compositions, and distorted figures.
Associated with Symbolism and a pioneer of Expressionism, Munch rejected realism in favor of emotional intensity. Works such as The Sick Child (1886), Madonna (1894–95), and The Dance of Life (1899–1900) reveal his fascination with the cycle of life and the tension between desire and despair.
In later years, Munch lived a reclusive life in Norway, where he continued painting themes of mortality and nature. His distinctive style — marked by swirling brushstrokes and vibrant, haunting colors — had a profound influence on German Expressionists and later modern art.
Today, Edvard Munch is regarded as one of the most important figures of modern painting, remembered for transforming personal anguish into universal artistic expression.
