About the Artist

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter, patron, and key figure in the Impressionist movement, though his style often blended realism with impressionistic light and composition. Trained as both an engineer and artist, Caillebotte brought a precise, almost photographic perspective to many of his works, especially his urban scenes of 19th-century Paris.

One of his most iconic paintings, Paris Street; Rainy Day (1877), showcases his distinctive approach—geometric, atmospheric, and emotionally reserved. Unlike some of his more spontaneously brushworked peers like Monet or Renoir, Caillebotte used careful planning, linear perspective, and subdued tones to evoke the rhythm and anonymity of modern life.

Beyond his own art, he was a generous supporter of his fellow Impressionists. He used his wealth to purchase and promote works by Monet, Degas, Pissarro, and others—many of which later became part of France’s national collection.

Though his reputation was somewhat overshadowed after his death, Caillebotte’s contributions as both artist and benefactor are now recognized as essential to the legacy of Impressionism. His works continue to captivate for their clarity, psychological depth, and modern sensibility.
